What is the ASCF?
The Australian Sport Climbing Federation (ASCF) is the internationally
recognised body responsible for the administration of sport climbing in
Australia. It accredits competitions, competitors and officials and works
actively to promote sport climbing throughout the country.
The ASCF Inc. was formed in June 1990 and is recognised by the International
Union of Alpinist Associations (UIAA) -- the world body for mountaineering
and rock climbing. ASCF exists to give Australian climbers a way to
participate in international competitions and to organise world-class
competition in Australia. ASCF-sanctioned competitions adhere to the UIAA
Committee for International Climbing Competitions (CICE) rules regarding
format, judging and route setting.
ASCF Inc. has established a ranking system for Australian sport climbers who
participate in ASCF-sanctioned competitions. The rankings form the basis for
selection of an Australian team each year. The Committee for International
Climbing Competitions has adopted regions based on those used by the
International Olympic Committee; Australia is in the Oceania region.
The ASCF Inc. actively promotes and encourages competitions at all levels:
Regional, State and National. We annually conduct National Championships
that run both open age categories as well as juniors including Under 18,
Under 16 Under 14 and Under 11 for both male and female competitors.
Although the sport has been dominated by the European nations, particularly
the French, since the first international competition took place in Italy in
1986, the very talented Australian climber Garth Miller has placed 7th at US
ESPN Extreme Games and has placed in the top 15 at a number of World Cups.
Other aspiring Aussies are World Cup material and the ASCF will help them
achieve their goals.
