Competition Climbing in World Games
March 8, 2003
The International World Games Association
(IWAG) meeting in Colorado Springs at the 36th
congress and general assembly for the General
Association of International Sporting Federations
(GAISF) voted to accept the UIAA into the IWGA.
This confirms the inclusion of competition
climbing in the 2005 World Games to be held in
Duisberg, Germany. UIAA President Ian
McNaught-Davis represents the UIAA at GAISF but
also attending for this important and historic
IWGA vote was Reindert Lenselink the General
Secretary of the UIAA's International Council for
Competition Climbing (ICC).
Reindert Lenselink said: "The World Games
is an excellent opportunity for competition
climbing to feature as part of a large and
important multi sport event, which is essential
experience for working towards the ultimate goal
of being included in the Olympic Games programme
which may take at least 10 years."
The World Games Association has welcomed a
letter of support from IOC President Jacques
Rogge urging all the National Olympic Committees
to support athletes and officials taking part in
the 2005 World Games. If such support is
forthcoming this could open the opportunity for
UIAA member associations (e.g. Australian Sport
Climbing Federation) to improve their links with
their National Olympic Committees. Welcoming the
letter from the IOC Roland Hilfiker, Vice
President of the International World Games
Association said: "The World Games 2005
Duisburg is the next milestone in anchoring the
global and multidisciplinary event within the
Olympic Movement."

Asian X Games Qualifier IV presented by Toyota
(AXQ)
As the Asian X Games Qualifier moves into its fourth
year, over 250 top action sports athletes from throughout
Asia and the Asian Pacific Region once again competed for
prize money, medals, and the most coveted prize of all- a
qualifying spot at the X Games VIII. Gold medalists from
this year's AXQ will travel to Philadelphia, U.S.A., in
2002 to compete against the WORLD'S best action sports
athletes.
Date: January 31st - Feburary 3rd, 2002
Venue: KLCC Park, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia located
strategically next to Malaysia's world landmark, the
Petronas Twin Towers.
The format: The comp was the same format as
last year: 30 men and 20 women from countries such as
Korea, Indonesia, Phillipines, China, Japan, Thailand,
Malaysia, NZ and Australia.
A few words from Samantha Berry:
"We practiced on our semi final routes on day one
then competed on them on day two. 15 men and 10 women
advanced into the final. Day three was tough. We had to
practice on our final routes in the morning and then
compete on them that afternoon. Hard work in 35 degree
heat!!
I actually injured myself during the first problem in
the final I tore some cartilage in my knee during a
desperate heel hook. The medical staff wanted to examine
me but I told them that I was OK. (If they had, they
wouldn't have let me continue). And somehow I managed to
top-out on the second problem. I must have been really
psyched! Anyhow, I'm really sore now and have to have
surgery when I get home so I'll be out of action for a
few weeks."
