Moonarie

South Australia's premiere cliff.
Moonarie is a remote cliff found in the heart of the Flinders ranges. It's wilderness feel, minimal fixed protection and the 40 minute uphill walk to the cliff may not appeal to everyone but I have never met anyone who has visited Moonarie and not raved about it. With more than 400 routes with grades ranging from 4 to 28, both single pitch and multi pitch (upto 120m) there is something for everyone.
The cracks are generally wider then at Mt Arapiles so a range of wider nuts and friends is recommended. There are no climbs fully equipped with fixed protection.

ROCK: Quartzite

LOCATION: Moonarie is a 2 km long section of cliff, in a national park, on the south eastern side of Wilpena Pound, about 450 km north of Adelaide. Hawker is the nearest town some 40 km to the south. From Hawker, drive 41km north towards Wilpena (not towards Liegh Creek), and turn left at a well signposted road to Arkaroo Rock, just past Prelinna Homestead. After 800m on this track and passing through two creek beds, turn left onto a wheel-track, about 150m after the road takes a broad turn to the right. This leads to the camp site.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: Winter is very cold and summer temps can reach 40-45 C. So Spring (September to November) and Autumn (March to May) are best.

CAMPING: There are no facilities at the camp-site, so water must be brought in . All rubbish must be carried out and bring a trowel or spade to bury you toilet paper, etc. Total firebans are in force from 1st November until 30th April.
