The Organ Pipes are found on the side of Mount Wellington. Visible from anywhere in Hobart, The Organ Pipes are Tasmania's most obvious crag. Only 20 minutes from the centre of Hobart you may as well climb there! They are made up of dolerite columns ranging up to 125 metres tall - hence the name. The climbing ranges from single pitch to multi pitch and most of the routes require a range of natural protection. There are a few short, completely bolt protected, face routes now at Lost World, New World and Teardrop Wall and more will appear in the future.
ROCK: Dolerite
LOCATION: If you can't find this one there's something wrong. From Franklin Square in the centre of Hobart travel south up Davey Street (this becomes Huon Rd) for 9.6km. Just before the township of Fern Tree, a well signposted road (Pillinger Drive) leads off sharply to the right and winds up the mountain. Follow this for 4.5km to reach The Springs, a picnic area with lots of parking (access to Gorbys Corners and Sphinx Rock). Another 2.7km further on is a small parking bay on the left-hand side of the road. Park here. Above the parking bay, a few minutes scrambling on a definite track brings one to the Organ Pipes Track.
Directly opposite is the track which leads to Northern Buttress and the Ship Wreck.
Without transport either hitch or catch a Fern Tree bus, route 47 or 48 (very infrequent on weekends) from Franklin Square and then hitch up Pillinger Drive.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Spring to Autumn (October to March).
CAMPING: With a population of 133,000, Hobart is the largest city in Tasmania so there is an infinite range of accommodation possibilities. The handiest camping ground is the Sandy Bay Caravan Park (1Peel St, Sandy Point) less than 3 km from the city (Ph: 6225 1264). Cost $12 a double for a camp site.
